Adult Motocross Grading 2010

It is the aim of the committee to have a fair and transparent system of grading for racing in 2010.  This will increase enjoyment and participation in our sport.
Grading will be based on lap times only.
There shall be 3 grades of motocross rider for Southern Centre riders for 2010.
Pro, Expert and Clubman classes will replace the old grades of A, B and C riders.
Only the Pro classes will be paid prize money.
Grades will be determined on each rider’s lap times in Southern Centre Championship racing in 2009. For 2011 grading, 2010 lap times will be included.
The lap times will be taken from five Adult Southern Centre events held at Gormanston, Ferns, Dundalk, Doon and Clonroche. In 2011, all rounds of the 2010 Southern Centre Adult championships are intended to be added to give a more accurate grading.
Each rider’s best lap times will be scored in relation to the other competing riders at each event and given a percentage, which will be averaged over the five events.
The fastest 23% will qualify as the Pro class.
Riders averaging fastest laps from 24% to 55% inclusive will be graded as Expert riders
The remaining riders will be graded as Clubman riders.
Any rider who has not been graded because of not taking part in any the above 5 events will remain at the same grade as they were in 2009. This grade can be changed on written appeal to the committee.
It will be totally at the discretion of the MX grading committee to change the grade of a rider at anytime where the grading committee deems to be incorrect.
Any points gained in a former grade cannot be carried in to a new grade.
A rider can request a review of their grade; this has to be in writing and presented to their club representative on the MX Management Committee.
Riders on their first years dual licence will automatically be graded in to the Expert class without regard to lap times, this will be applicable for the first year only and subsequent years grading will on lap times as normal. If a new dual rider would like to change this grade he/she can apply to do so.
A separate grading system will be operated for the Veterans and Grass track racing.
In special circumstances and subject to prior approval by the motocross committee, a graded rider can ride outside his grade without points scoring or award of any kind.
All graded riders will be posted on the official website: www.mcimotocross.ie.

How the grading is calculated:
The full individual lap times for each rider are examined for one Adult Southern Centre championship event in 2009 and each riders fastest lap time of the day is extracted.
This lap time is compared to the rest of the other rider’s fastest times and put in to ascending order from fastest rider to slowest rider.
This fastest lap time is given a percentage score based on their position in this list in relation to the other fastest lap times.
This process is continued for the other four-recorded S.C. Championship races of the year and the average score is calculated.
The result is put in to a chart and the rider is left with an overall percentage score.
Riders scoring from 1 to 23% are graded as Pro Riders.
Riders scoring from 24% to 55% are graded as Expert riders.
Riders scoring from 56% to 100% are graded as Clubman riders.

For example: Rider X gets the 23rd fastest lap out of 112 riders on the day.  This means he is in the top 20.53 % of lap times that day. This figure is rounded down to 20%.  In the next 4 races he scores 21%, 25%, 19% and 28% respectively.
The average works out to be 22. % (22.6%), so Rider X is graded as a Pro.
